Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this
position is to operate the main power plant and auxiliary mechanical rooms in a
State Office Complex to ensure proper quality temperature control of
approximately twenty-three buildings, which could require repairing and
adjusting various heating and air conditioning equipment. The power plant
operates 24/7, the incumbent may be required to work various shifts, weekends
and/or holidays.
This is an emergency essential position subject to emergency release procedures. Employees in this position must be willing and available for duty at all hours, day or night, and are required to remain or report for duty at all hours as needed to maintain the continuous operation of this agency.
If you are the selected
candidate for this position, you will be required to complete a Pre-Employment
Physical, which will assess your ability to safely perform the essential
functions of this position.
POSITION DUTIES
Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Safely operate and maintain
central plant equipment, including boilers, chillers, pumps, and auxiliary
systems.
- Monitor and record equipment
readings and respond appropriately to abnormal conditions.
-Perform preventive and
corrective maintenance to minimize downtime.
-Read and interpret blueprints,
schematics, and technical manuals.
-Utilize computerized
maintenance management systems (CMMS) and building automation systems.
- Respond effectively to
emergencies and support 24/7 facility operations.
- Work independently while
collaborating with maintenance staff, contractors, and building management.
- Maintain compliance with
OSHA, environmental, and the State of Maryland safety regulations for a 24-hour
operation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a State high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of experience as a Stationary Engineer 1st Grade.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute additional experience up to four years as a licensed first-grade engineer on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute
U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Utilities
man classifications or Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Mechanic, or
Utilities Chief specialty codes in the Equipment Maintenance field of work on a
year-for-year basis for the required experience.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess the following additional qualification(s) to be considered. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding all qualifications.
-Possession of a Maryland First Grade Stationary Engineer License.
-Three years of experience operating and maintaining central plant equipment, including high-pressure boilers, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and associated mechanical systems.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Strong preference will be given
to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s).
Include clear and specific information on your application regarding all
qualifications.
-Possession of a Maryland First Grade Stationary Engineer License with 5 or more years of central plant operations experience.
-Experience operating and maintaining high-pressure boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, generators, and steam distribution systems in a large institutional, government, healthcare, or higher education facility.
-Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), including Tridium Niagara, Metasys, or other automated building control systems.
-Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), such as eMaint, Maximo, or a similar platform.
-Experience in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems while minimizing downtime to critical operations.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this
classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Stationary
Engineer, 1st Grade from the State Board of Stationary Engineers.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Safety Requirements: Ability to use and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with OSHA, State of Maryland, and Department of General Services safety policies.

Eligible lists may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification.
