The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. POSITION DUTIES

With nearly 9,000 employees, and a budget of close to $1.2 billion, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is one of the largest state agencies in Maryland. The Department’s functions include the operation of three correctional divisions that total 27 facilities, and 45 parole and probation supervision offices.

The main purpose of this position is to serve as an ADA Specialist with the Office of Fair Practices and Inclusion (OFPI). This position will be responsible for ADA within their specific area of DPSCS. 

The incumbent will perform the following duties: 

  • Handle the ADA absenteeism process and list in coordination with DPSCS-HR. 
  • Investigate complaints of discrimination equal employment opportunity. 
  • Receive and process ADA reasonable accommodation requests in an interactive process with the employee, medical provider, HR, the appointing authority, and any other relevant parties. 
  • Maintain confidential ADA files. Report out routine ADA data to the Executive Direction. 
  • Make recommendations regarding ADA training, operational issues, training and programming. 
  • Provide information and guidance to managers regarding ADA/ADA Absenteeism/EEO laws and requirements for compliance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications to be considered, and to appear on the list of people eligible for hire. Please read all requirements before applying.

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.


1. Three (3) years of experience independently managing and owning the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) interactive process, including evaluating requests and making accommodation determinations.
2. Experience conducting interactive processes involving the employee, medical provider, HR, the appointing authority, and any other relevant parties. 
3. Experience managing multiple cases simultaneously. 
4. Experience related to ADA law and compliance.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

  • Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date)
