The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) is seeking to hire a full-time, permanent Administrator of Architectural Research in the Office of Research, Survey, and Registration. The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation and education, MHT helps the people of Maryland understand their history and cultural heritage. POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this supervisory position is to oversee the Maryland Historical Trust’s Architectural Research Unit in the Office of Research, Survey, & Registration (ORSR). The Administrator of Architectural Research is responsible for directing all phases of planning, development, implementation, and personnel oversight for employees and programs in this section of ORSR, including the National Register of Historic Places and the statewide survey program. This work is consistent with MDP’s mission, with MHT’s mission of studying, evaluating, protecting and interpreting the state’s historic sites, structures, districts, and cultural traditions, and with National Park Service requirements of a State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). ORSR is one of the four major operating units of MHT, and is responsible for the identification, documentation, and evaluation of historical and cultural resources in three sub-programs: Architectural Research, Archaeological Research, and Cultural Resource Information Management.

 Oversees planning, development, implementation, and staff supervision for MHT’s Architectural Research Unit. 
 Co-administers the Historic Preservation Non-Capital Grant Program related to standing structures. 
 Manages select non-capital grant projects, including: the development of scopes of work; hiring, training, and supervision of consultants; and comprehensive review of deliverables. 
 Administers Federal grants related to survey and registration. 
 Supervises staff from ORSR’s National Register program, a federally mandated role for the SHPO that includes the review and processing of approximately 25 nominations annually. 
 Provides technical assistance on identifying and evaluating historic resources to local governments, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and the public. 
 Serves as the primary point of expertise for complex, site specific architectural projects including recommendation for and supervision of the preparation of historic structures reports, and the investigation and documentation of historic buildings. 
 Synthesizes research data produced by the unit and ensures that results are incorporated into the larger agency programs and databases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for five years of the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of professional work experience including research, writing, teaching, interpretation, or other demonstrable professional activity with an academic institution, historic organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or closely related field.

Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in History and/or Architectural History (https://www.nps.gov/articles/sec-standards-prof-quals.htm). 

Demonstrated knowledge of the history of Maryland architecture and the analysis of historic building technology.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
