Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service, Natural Heritage Program, is currently accepting applications for a seasonal contractual Habitat Restoration Biologist. This position is full-time (40 hours per week). This position will be based in Annapolis, Maryland but projects will require travel throughout the State. This position will assist the State Restoration Ecologist and other land managers with habitat restoration and management activities in high priority natural areas. The habitat restoration biologist must be skilled at project coordination and have excellent communication skills with others to ensure site management objectives are met in an appropriate, timely, and safe manner. Duties include rare species surveying, monitoring, and mapping using GIS and other field data collection methods, operation and maintenance of equipment, tree removal using chainsaws, woody plant and invasive species control using mechanical methods and/or herbicide applications, firebreak prep work using brush mowers/cutters and debris blowers, prescribed fire operations using UTVs and Type 6 engines equipped with water delivery systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of a four-year degree from an accredited college or university in biology, environmental, natural science, natural resource management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resource management related field of study.

Experience: Two years of experience conducting technical work in the fields of biology, botany, environmental science, forestry management, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, wildlife management or zoology. 

Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute experience in natural resources management, biology, botany, forestry, ecology, or a related field on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. One year of graduate study in the field of natural resources may be substituted for one year of experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Natural Heritage Program survey methodology
  • Experience with plant and animal identification
  • Experience in developing and implementing habitat restoration plans
  • Experience with ecological assessments and monitoring techniques
  • Ability to identify common invasive plant species of Maryland.
  • Experience with techniques and strategies to control non-native plant species.
  • Experience with GIS mapping and field data collection using ESRI Field Maps.
  • Experience with natural resource land management techniques
  • Experience in operating and maintaining equipment including chainsaws, brush cutters/mowers, debris blowers, herbicide sprayers, portable water pumps, and UTVs.
  • Experience with prescribed fire management and qualified as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) including the completion of the following additional NWCG training courses: S-212 Wildland Chainsaws, S-211 Portable Pumps and Water Use, ATV/UTV Safety and Operations.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team setting under a highly stressful and dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain.
  • Excellent project coordination and communication skills.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons in this position may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
