Introduction

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is a department under Maryland's Executive Branch.  Formed in 1972 by the Maryland General Assembly to address the agriculture needs for the State of Maryland, the Department oversees and serves as a regulatory body for animal health, consumer services to include marketing and lab services, plant and pest management and resource conservation.  As the number one industry in Maryland, the diversity of agriculture programs in the State continue to expand and grow. ​

The Office of Plant Industries and Pest Management is made up of six sections: Pesticide Regulation, Forest Pest Management, Plant Protection and Weed Management, Turf and Seed, Mosquito Control, and State Chemist. These sections administer programs and enforce state or federal laws, regulations and quarantines related to management of pests that affect health of crops, forests, and natural areas; application and disposal of pesticides within the state; mosquito control; quality of commercial agricultural products sold in Maryland; quality of seeds and turf; and control of noxious weeds. LOCATION OF POSITION

Based at MDA Headquarters in Annapolis but will involve statewide travel.

Main Purpose of Job

Field Technicians will assist in critical survey and detection activities for invasive insect pests throughout the State of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

Primary responsibilities include the physical deployment and routine maintenance of insect traps in diverse outdoor environments, ensuring that all biological samples are handled and documented correctly. Technicians are responsible for accurate data collection using specialized equipment, including GPS units for geospatial mapping and personal computers for digital record-keeping. Because many survey sites are located on or near residential or agricultural lands, the role involves regular, professional interactions with the public to explain program goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 18 years of age.  Must possess a driver’s license valid in Maryland and have no more than five (5) points on your current driving record.

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications: 
  • Experience with biological field work including but not limited to: Surveys of insects Maintenance of insect traps Data collection 
  • Use of equipment such as GPS units and personal computers.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
