Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife & Heritage Service is currently accepting applications for a seasonal contractual position to aid in the conservation of rare insects throughout Maryland (including Western MD and the Eastern Shore). This work will primarily be comprised of conducting daytime and nighttime surveys for rare insects and performing restoration work (plantings, invasive removal, etc.) either independently or with the Natural Heritage Entomologist. Duties will also include data entry, GIS mapping, insect collection curation, and revising conservation recommendations. Assigned duties may also depend on the interests or expertise of the technician. Start date is negotiable through May.

This position will be based out of Tawes State Office Building in Annapolis, MD but we will be traveling across the entire state. This work may require weekend or overnight travel. Applicants must be able to use their own vehicle for transportation to field sites in the event a state vehicle is not available. Be aware that field work will include potentially uncomfortable conditions such as exposure to heat, humidity, poison ivy, thorns, mosquitos, and ticks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of entomology, biology, botany, forestry, ecology, or a related field. 

Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute a combination of education and experience in entomology, biology, botany, forestry, ecology, or a related field on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. Thirty credit hours are considered equivalent to one year of experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science or a related natural resources management field of study.
  • Insect identification skills including the ability to identify one or more of the following groups: butterflies, moths, or dragonflies & damselflies.
  • Prior insect survey experience either professional or personal including the ability to document records and draft reports. Experience with light sheeting, sweep netting, and insect pinning. 
  • Experience with ArcGIS, iNaturalist, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word. 
  • A strong work ethic, the ability to work well both independently and in small teams during the day or night in remote areas with minimal supervision is required. 
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions in remote locations.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons in this position may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
