POSITION DUTIES

This position is responsible for teaching firearms classroom topics as well as performing firing line duties during basic entrance level weapon classes, firearms instructor schools, conversion schools, special weapons schools and other programs as requested.

Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assist in the evaluation of firearms student's skills, in an effort to determine if the student requires additional/remedial training
  • Assist with the training of qualified retired law enforcement officers in the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) and ensure all federal mandates are met
  • Assist staff and allied agencies with the set up and operation of the MILO firearms range simulator, training students in the use of force and judgemental scenarios
  • Assist staff with the general maintenance of the facility, opening and closing of buildings and ranges to include putting up/taking down targets, lifting and carrying barricades, cleaning the range, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two years of the required experience. 

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

1. A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a firearms instructor in the law enforcement or military field

2. Applicant must hold a valid MPCTC Academic Instructor Certification under COMAR 12.04.06 or be able to achieve such certification within six (6) months of beginning employment

3. Applicant must hold a valid MPCTC Firearms Instructor Certification under COMAR 12.04.06 or be able to achieve such certification within six (6) months of beginning employment

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualifications. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

1. Experience instructing firearms training to police recruits or in-service level students under the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission standards

2. Experience or certification as an end user or instructor in the use of Type 1-4 long guns

3. Armorer certifications in weapons commonly used in law enforcement

4. Experience in the set up/use of the MILO training simulator

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
