POSITION DUTIES
This job announcement is for two different positions. An Estate Tax Auditor and an Amended Processor.
Both of these positions are located in downtown Annapolis and are eligible for a hybrid telework schedule after the successful completion of the probationary period.
ESTATE TAX AUDITOR:
The
Comptroller of Maryland's Revenue Administration Division is seeking to hire a Revenue Specialist I for the Estate tax and non-resident sales tax section.
The Revenue Specialist I is an advanced level of work reviewing, examining, investigating Estate tax
returns in accordance with statutory provisions, as well as corresponding with and assisting taxpayers.
The incumbent in this position will examine tax returns and other documents for accuracy and compliance
with tax laws, rules and regulations: Determine the accuracy of tax returns, reports and the development of
tax liability; Research delinquent accounts; Assist in the development and implementation of methods and
procedures for the control and processing of transactions, the maintenance of records and accounts, and
the preparation of reports; Assist in the preparation of cases for litigation; Provide tax advice and
assistance to public, private or commercial interests; Advise taxpayers and subordinates on changes in
laws, rules and regulations; Correct, adjust and amend taxpayer’s tax returns according to the applicable
tax laws; Assist taxpayers through telephone or written communications in order to answer their specific
questions according to the applicable tax laws.
AMENDED PROCESSOR:
The Comptroller of Maryland's Revenue Administration Division is seeking to hire a Revenue Specialist I for the Taxpayer Accounting section, Amended Returns unit.
The purpose of this position is to process amended returns at the advanced level, to correct financial data and tax calculations for taxpayer returns, reports, and related transactions. This responsibility encompasses multiple tax types and includes all financial maintenance necessary after the initial data posting to computer system files.
The incumbent in the position will be reviewing and responding timely to incoming written correspondence for multiple tax types, including individual, corporate, fiduciary, withholding, and pass through entity, and requests involving tax laws, tax forms, amendments, adjustments, corrections, financial information, payment plans, and other governmental issues. Strong customer service skills are a must in the position as you will also be providing service via telephone contact to taxpayers, tax professionals, and the public, with inquiries related to multiple tax types and other Maryland State income tax issues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, including or supplemented by a course in bookkeeping or accounting.
Experience: Three years of experience performing work in tax assessments, collections, investigations, examinations, adjustments or taxpayer services within two or more of the specialized fields of revenue administration, or performing work in tax assessments, collections, investigations, examinations, adjustments or taxpayer services within the motor fuel/motor carrier tax field. The specialized fields may include sales and use tax, income tax, admissions and amusement tax, withholding tax, alcohol and tobacco tax, and any other revenue levy authorized by the legislature.
Notes:
Candidates may substitute the possession of an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in finance technician classification or finance technician specialty codes in the financial clerical and technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of Highview data management system. Knowledge of SMART database system. Knowledge of RPE and Service Now systems. Knowledge of Estate tax laws, rules and regulations. Knowledge of Non-Resident Sales tax laws, rules and regulations. Proficient in MS Office Suite and generating business correspondence.
