Main Purpose of Job

The Seasonal Museum Interpreter supports the development and delivery of public programs, ensuring high-quality visitor experiences and smooth daytoday operations of a State Museum. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions at multiple sites across varied terrain. Applicants must be available to work every weekend day and holidays.

POSITION DUTIES

• Greet and engage visitors, lead tours, and deliver thought-provoking interpretation to diverse audiences.  Speak comfortably with groups and individuals.
• Provide outreach and support for special events, working as part of a team.
• Answer visitors’ inquiries on site history, information and regulations. 
• Monitor visitors to encourage compliance with site regulations.    
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of historic buildings, exhibits, grounds and public restrooms.
• Use of a computer and point-of-sale system to sell merchandise and complete reports.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing; monitor and respond to written email communications on a regular basis.
• Demonstrate a commitment to inclusion, accessibility, and community engagement.
• Work schedule will be Saturdays and Sundays, 8 hours per day, usually scheduled between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Some additional hours and/or days may be requested of the employee with advance notice.
• Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions.
• Work can be physical in nature, requiring the ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, lift and carry objects, do repetitive bending and stooping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• GED or High School Diploma 
• Must be available to work weekends for the duration of the 2026 Season (April – November). 
• Applicants selected for employment may undergo an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to: employment reference check, education verification, driving record check (if the position requires employees to drive a vehicle) and a criminal history check including fingerprinting. Should the position you are in consideration for require an employment, driving or criminal history check, continued employment will be contingent on the results.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Education or work experience in museum education, history, public history, or education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
