Main Purpose of Job

The Geologist Supervisor will ensure the protection and wise use of the State's water resources. The incumbent in this position will function as a Section Head within the Source Protection and Water Appropriation Division. The incumbent will also supervise professional geologists, engineers, and/or clerical staff engaged in the evaluation and technical review of water appropriation and use permits in accordance with Maryland statutes. The Geologist Supervisor will also conduct source water assessments and develop wellhead protection plans for the protection of public water systems. The incumbent will also oversee administrative and technical aspects of water resource management and protection projects and investigations. 

This position involves the following working conditions: 
• Exposure to hazardous conditions that may result in injury. 
• Field visits may involve rough, rocky or wet terrain. 
• Required use of protective equipment—such as goggles, gloves, and masks—during site visits. 


The incumbent will be required to drive a State vehicle. If you hold an out-of-state driver’s license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the issuing state’s  Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of hire. All individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record to operate a State vehicle.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: Six years of experience performing professional geological work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science for the required education and one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

  • Experience writing or reviewing Maryland Water Appropriation and Use Permits.
  • Experience in supervising or leading professional environmental staff.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment, such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazard Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State employees are awarded six (6) personal leave days annually (prorated based on start date).

ANNUAL LEAVE - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year.

SICK LEAVE – fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year.

PARENTAL LEAVE – up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child.

HOLIDAYS – State employees also celebrate at least twelve (12) holidays per year.
