Main Purpose of Job

This position, located in the Health Equity Division, will support the mission of promoting, protecting, and improving community health by advancing strategies that address social and structural determinants of health, with a particular focus on historically marginalized populations. This position will serve as a liaison between community members, the Frederick County Health Department, and community partners to strengthen relationships, expand access to services, and reduce health disparities. This position will provide health education presentations throughout the county, increase awareness of available programs and resources, and engage community members through outreach activities designed to address barriers to optimal health.

Additionally, this position will offer referrals, share health information, and support initiatives that aim to lessen the impact of social and structural health determinants on priority populations in Frederick County. This position will also learn to plan, develop, implement, and promote multiple community health education projects; learn to obtain and use health-related data to assess community health education needs and interests, and also learn to review, evaluate, and determine the most effective educational materials and methods for meeting the health education needs of the community or specific populations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health Education, Community Health Education or Health Science.

Experience: None.

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 18 credit hours in Public Health Education, Community Health Education, Health Science or related behavioral science and one year of experience in planning, developing, implementing and promoting health education projects for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Educator and Community Health classifications or Health Educator and Community Health specialty codes in the Public Health field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:
  • Experience finding, planning, and taking part in community events in a health-related field.
  • Experience engaging with community members, gathering feedback, and using those skills to improve outreach activities, materials, and services.
  • Experience communicating clearly and confidently in front of groups, and giving presentations to people of different ages, cultures, and education levels. 
  • Experience or willingness to learn new technology and create outreach materials such as flyers, presentations, and newsletter content to support community outreach and health education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
