The Office of the Public Defender is seeking detail oriented applicants with experience working with arrested persons, attorneys, law enforcement and courtroom personnel to fill a full-time Public Defender Intake Specialist Supervisor position in our Montgomery County – Rockville and Silver Spring offices.

Main Purpose of Job

The Public Defender Intake Specialist Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing 1) the intake interview process of clients, including data entry into the case management system, 2) the creation of case files, and 3) intake level client contact. Significant client contact to provide and gather information will be a requirement in this position as well as data entry of case information. Travel between offices and detention facilities will be required.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a District Public Defender (DPD), Deputy District Public Defender (DDPD), and Office Manager. Work is performed at local public defender offices, jails, detention centers, prisons and the courts of Maryland. The Intake Supervisor will be directly responsible for the operation of the Intake Division, including supervising staff, safeguarding confidential information, facilitating applications for OPD services, liaising with other core staff members, and managing the ‘first-touch’ of client files. The Intake Supervisor will be responsible for the production of the Intake Daily Report to the DPD and DDPD. The Intake Supervisor will also be responsible for holding regular staff meetings with the intake team, providing performance feedback for members of the intake team, and generating ideas to improve performance and customer service. The Intake Supervisor will also be responsible for taking on additional duties as required by the DPD, DDPD and Office Manager. 

A significant portion of the job duties will be performed in the district offices, in the courthouses and in local detention or correctional facilities. Candidates must be able to access and be able to work consistently in each and all of those locations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredit high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience interviewing persons for the purpose of obtaining and verifying background or financial information.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university for six months of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university for up to 18 months of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Compliance Inspection and Support classifications or Compliance Inspection and Support specialty codes in the Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement, and Compliance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working in a law office or court system.  Good organizational and problem solving skills, and the ability to multi-task.  Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.  Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong preference for bi-lingual candidates (Spanish preferred).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
