Introduction

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s $46 billion insurance industry and protects consumers by monitoring and enforcing insurers’ and insurance professionals’ compliance with State law. Staff members are subject matter experts who serve as a resource for lawmakers, consumers, and other public and private entities. 

 

The MIA is charged with a broad range of responsibilities including the licensure of insurance carriers and insurance producers (brokers/agents) operating in Maryland, the conduct of financial examinations of companies to monitor financial solvency, and the review and approval of rates and contract forms. The MIA investigates reports of consumer fraud and consumer complaints about life, health, automobile, homeowners, and/or property insurance.  Insurance carriers are subject to market conduct examinations and other actions to monitor compliance with Maryland law.  The MIA also has a unit dedicated to consumer education and outreach, which participates in hundreds of events and reaches thousands of individual consumers annually.

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Insurance Administration’s Insurance Fraud and Producer Enforcement Division is recruiting for the position of Investigative Auditor.  This position will be working on criminal investigative teams which include prosecutors and investigators. Duties will include forensic auditing and analysis of financial, real estate settlement/title, and other business records; participating in the interviewing of witnesses, victims, targets and others in connection with investigation; and preparing reports of interviews, financial evidence and other investigative developments. The Investigative Auditor will draft subpoenas and monitor compliance; assists attorneys and investigators in witness interviews and preparation for trial; and testify before the grand jury and in criminal court proceedings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related discipline.

Experience: Minimum of three (3) years experience in forensic auditing.

 

Note:   Additional experience in forensic auditing may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.     Experience in criminal investigation.

2.     Certified Public Accountant (CPA); Certified Internal Auditor (CIA); Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or similar designations are preferred.

3.     Knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Access or similar computer software.

4.     Ability to handle complex financial investigations, with prior experience participating in investigative interviews.

5.     Ability to work in teams, with prior experience working with prosecutors and/or attorneys.

6.     Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and a strong attention to detail.
