Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position serving as Managing Director of the Tourism Department (TD) within the Office of the Secretary. 

POSITION DUTIES

This is an executive position whose primary function is to direct and manage the operations of the Tourism Department to grow Maryland as a highly competitive, desirable and successful destination. This position will plan, develop, implement, review, and revise policies and objectives for the Tourism Department in alignment with the mission of the agency. 

Duties include: 
  • Developing and organizing tourism programs for the State
  • Coordinating and formulating strategies 
  • Setting standards for investment in tourism through direct interaction with public and private industry representatives 
  • Developing marketing initiatives and campaigns
  • Overseeing financial/budgeting management tasks promoting state-wide tourism assets, programs, events, cultural and recreational tourism resources to grow Maryland as a leading regional and national travel destination.  
  • Manage and oversee a professional and administrative staff
  • Lead legislative and budgeting efforts and initiatives for tourism, develop programs that will increase tourism visitation, prepare performance updates and reports on tourism activities and represent the organization at various meetings. 
  • Statewide travel is required.

Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; demonstrated track record of success operating in the tourism environment working with private, public and  government officials, legislative and stakeholders; considerable knowledge of and experience with the state level tourism industry, its cultural, community and unique tourism assets; demonstrated success in managing and motivating a staff; knowledge and experience of the legislative and budgeting processes, methods, approaches and procedures involved in tourist promotion; knowledge of advertising and tourism market techniques, practices, and methods, Ability to successfully handle multiple high priority assignments. Proficiency Microsoft Office, Google, or other relevant software is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related field

 

Experience: Ten (10) years of direct experience in state level tourism that includes tourism promotion, developing and managing innovative and strategic tourism marketing programs and five (5) years supervisory management experience. Experience in economic development programs to include fiscal and budget management.

 

Note:

1. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.


DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

1. Familiarity with Maryland’s tourism industry, geography, architecture and heritage. 

2. Advanced degree in tourism management or related field. 

3. Knowledge of and experience with Maryland’s legislative process and policy makers.
