Introduction
This is a Firearm and Toolmark Examiner training program with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division for a qualified forensic science student intern from an accredited college or university to complete while enrolled as an undergraduate. It is a year-round (12 month) contractual program consisting of 20 hours per week for a two year period.

Main Purpose of Job
This is a trainee Firearm and Toolmark Examiner position. As an Examiner trainee, the main goal is to learn how to independently examine and compare firearms and ammunition components, perform chemical tests on related evidence and form well-supported conclusions. The trainee will also work toward becoming qualified to provide expert testimony in court on firearms and toolmark identification.
POSITION DUTIES
Firearm and toolmark examiner training program to include, but not limited to:
Background/history of firearms and toolmark identification, firearms and ammunition development, manufacture of modern firearms and ammunition, instrumentation, examination of firearms, bullets, cartridge cases and other fired components, report writing, courtroom testimony
Completion of training in functional testing of firearms, serial number restoration, triage and NIBIN database entry
Participate in and successfully complete a mock trial at the conclusion of the training program
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education - A full-time student enrolled in a Forensic Sciences, Forensic Investigations, or Forensic Studies program pursuing a four year degree in one of the following areas: Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Medical Technology, Pharmaceutical Science, or related physical, natural or forensic science from an accredited college or university.

NOTE: The student must currently be in good standing and maintain this status. They will have successfully completed two of the four years of the required study by May 2026, with an anticipated graduation within the next two years as the program will end at the completion of this two year period.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination will consist of rating your education related to the requirements of the position. Applicants will also be subject to an interview and successful completion of a background investigation to include a polygraph examination and substance abuse testing.
