Introduction

This recruitment is limited to current employees of the Maryland Department of Planning, Preservation Services.

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking to hire a State Underwater Archaeologist. MHT is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation and education, MHT assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage. Part of the Maryland Department of Planning, MHT serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of the position is to administer, manage and supervise the Maryland Maritime Archaeology Program (MMAP), a component of MHT’s Office of Preservation Services, a statewide program which enhances Maryland’s historic sites and traditions by identifying, evaluating, protecting, and studying maritime and underwater archaeological resources located within Maryland waters; by disseminating research and educational information about submerged cultural resources to both professional and public communities; and by executing authorized and mandated federal and state activities and programs as they relate to maritime and underwater archaeological resources. The position directly supports MHT’s mission to assist the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage through research, conservation and education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, historic preservation, or a closely related field, with an emphasis in maritime archaeology, maritime history, or historical archaeology preferred.
Experience: Five years of professional archaeology experience that includes at least three years of supervisory field experience, one year of which must be supervisory experience in underwater archaeology, and one year of which must be as project Principal Investigator / Project Director. 
Notes: 1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  1. It is preferred that a majority of stated archaeology experience is in underwater archaeology. 
  2. Certified diver with extensive diving experience, including diving in low visibility conditions. Capable of performing diving operations. May be required to pass a diving skills test. 
  3. Must be adept with electronic remote sensing equipment, software, and navigation programs. 
  4. Must have experience handling boats, towing vehicles, and trailers.
