The Maryland State Retirement Agency is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Senior Portfolio Manager in its Investment Division. The Senior Portfolio Manager reports directly to the Managing Director, Private Equity and will work collaboratively with the Private Equity Team to support the overall investment program. The Senior Portfolio Manager will primarily focus on the co-investment segment across the System’s private market portfolio. In addition, the individual will have primary relationship responsibility for several Private Equity general partners. The individual will assist in the overall management of the Private Equity portfolio and training of junior staff. This position will require travel which will likely include international travel.

Main Purpose of Job
POSITION DUTIES
- Source opportunities; perform investment due diligence; coordinate the legal review process; and monitor the performance of the co-investment portfolio.
- Provide detailed analysis of investments in individual companies across a wide range of sectors and geographies in a very short timeframe.
- Evaluate pace of investment of thirty to fifty opportunities per year resulting in ten to twenty investments.
- Primary relationship responsibility for several Private Equity general partners. Perform regular reviews and evaluations of managers, participate in meetings with prospective managers; assist with due diligence on new investments; assist in the process of reviewing and negotiating fund documentation.
- Assist with the overall management of the Private Equity Portfolio.
- Assist with the development of junior staff.
- Perform ad-hoc projects and analysis as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
Experience: Ten years of professional investment experience, in evaluating co-investments and recommending private market investments.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- CFA and/or CAIA, FRM designation
- Advanced degrees in Math, Science, Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration or similar fields of study.
- Experience evaluating buyout, growth and venture capital general partners.
- Experience evaluating direct co-investment opportunities
