Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Business Development Manager within its Division of Business Attraction & Special Projects’ Office of Regional Development.

POSITION DUTIES

This position is primarily responsible for retention and expansion needs and opportunities and assisting or leading business attraction opportunities in Southern Maryland. The incumbent will actively market and promote the region’s unique assets, providing economic development assistance to businesses, counties, and economic development organizations and partners. The Business Development Manager will provide financial, regulatory and technical assistance to businesses in cooperation with county partners; provide consultative services to businesses, and site location assistance to new and expanding businesses. Other duties include assisting in the development of regional strategic economic development plans; and working closely with and maintaining relationships with high level public and private sector officials, including county economic development officials, local state and federal agencies, businesses and lending institutions. Regional travel is required, as is, attendance at in-state conferences.

 

The candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills to work with high level public and private sector officials and maintain effective working relationships; excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in business development, business needs assessment and strategic planning; ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority projects; proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business, real estate, planning, or a related industry field

 

Experience: At least six (6) years of recent professional experience in industrial, business or economic development; marketing; planning; commercial real estate; or related field

 

Note:

1. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

2. Graduate education at an accredited college or university, at the rate of 30 credit hours on a year-for-year basis, may be substituted for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher-ranking commissioned officer may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.


DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  1. Local economic and business development experience within Southern Maryland
  2. Demonstrated sales, business marketing experience. 
  3. Possession of the Certified Economic Developer credential by the International Economic Development Council.
