Main Purpose of Job

The General Accounting Division of the Comptroller of Maryland, located in historic and picturesque Annapolis, is seeking a highly motivated Accounting Supervisor to join our Financial Operations and Reporting Team. This position plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of Maryland’s statewide accounting and financial reporting systems. Reporting to the Manager of Systems Control and Operations, the Accounting Supervisor will: 
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of accounting data within the Statewide Financial Management Information System (FMIS). 
  • Support the development and coordination of statewide financial reporting systems and accounting methodologies. 
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all statutory financial reporting requirements. 
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Accounting Operations Section, contributing to the agency’s mission of fiscal responsibility and transparency.

Important Notes: Employees of the Comptroller of Maryland are prohibited from preparing tax returns for compensation due to potential conflicts of interest. Vacation leave is limited during fiscal closeout (July through December).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with 30 credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing.

Experience: Three years of experience ensuring appropriate and consistent interpretation of and compliance with statutory and generally accepted accounting principles in a fiscal control agency or three years of experience supervising professional accounting functions.

Notes: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in financial management classification or financial management specialty codes in the accounting field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA candidate, Experience in State Government Accounting
