Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as the Assistant Permits Coordinator within the Wildlife & Heritage Service. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide logistical customer service support for 42 distinct wildlife related permits issued by the Service. Examples include Scientific Collecting, Endangered Species, Regulated Shooting Areas, Captive Reptile and Amphibians, and Deer Cooperator Permits. This position also assists the Offshore Blind and Shoreline License Coordinator with assisting the public and issuing these permits and licenses. In addition, when necessary, they will coordinate and assist with the permits section of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regarding federal special purpose permits. Wildlife species are held in public trust and any use of these species or take from the wild requires monitoring special permits that may include conditional requirements. The incumbent also provides field and office assistance to other programs within the Wildlife & Heritage Service on an as-needed basis, particularly in the area of bat and other natural heritage research and management studies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Seven years of experience, five years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management and an additional two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study and five years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute additional education beyond the 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Geographic Information System mapping tools, spreadsheet creation, and database management.
  • Experience with Microsoft teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a virtual environment.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
