The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. The DJS Somatic Health Division is committed to protecting, promoting, and advancing the health of all youth in the care of the Department. DJS is seeking a passionate individual for the role of Nurse Practitioner to join the somatic health team in making a meaningful impact on youth and the community at DJS!


This is a position responsible for:


  • Providing primary health care services for youth at DJS facilities and shelter;
  • Overseeing the DJS vaccination program for youth and assisting with outbreak and infection control;

  • Assisting the DJS Medical Director as needed on quality assurance activities, health initiatives, policy and protocol development, and special projects.

  • Work is performed under the direction of the Medical Director. 
  • An employee in this class exercises independence of action and initiative.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education  Determined by Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses under the certification requirements for Nurse Practitioner or Nurse-Midwife.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Family or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • One or more years of experience providing primary care to male and female adolescent patients.
  • Experience working in a correctional, residential, or school-based setting.
  • Experience performing quality assurance activities..
  • Experience writing policy and procedures.
  • Experience assisting with outbreaks, infection control, opioid overdose prevention, and/or vaccination programs.
  • Excellent writing ability and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to be in shared coverage for on-call duties after hours, and to travel to DJS facilities as needed.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current certificate as a Nurse Practitioner or as a Nurse Midwife from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
