Main Purpose of Job

Join Us in Making a Difference at DJS!

The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of Community Detention Officer I, so come join our team and make a meaningful impact on youth and the community at DJS!

The Community Detention Officer I plays a key role in supporting the Evening Reporting Center (ERC) by supervising and guiding youth in court-ordered alternatives to detention. This role is ideal for a safety-minded professional dedicated to youth development and making a positive impact in the community.

The ERC allows a youth to remain in the community pending a court appearance. Under this initiative, youth are placed in court ordered alternative to detention programs, as opposed to being placed in secure confinement. In addition, the court may order that some youth be placed in the ERC along with Global Positioning System (GPS), Community Detention and/or Electronic Monitoring. The ERC is also used as a Pre-Court service for cases that have been deemed minor in the intake process. These cases have been flagged as possibly being resolved at the intake level, not forwarding the case to court. The ERC serves both the male and female populations in Baltimore County with a total capacity of 15-20 youth.

Youth in the program are subject to enhanced treatment and supervision through daily attendance at the program. The ERC is responsible for providing supervision and guidance to youth, while maintaining safety, care and program continuity in accordance with established DJS policies and procedures. In addition, the ERC Community Detention Officer (CDO) will ensure that youth are abiding by program rules and conditions of the Court and the CDO will perform duties under general supervision. Additionally, the purpose of this position is to provide direct care coverage of the youth over the duration of the shift.
