Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Fishing and Boating Service, Albert
Powell Fish Hatchery is currently accepting applications for a seasonal/contractual Coldwater Hatchery Associate
position where they will assist the Fish Production Manager with multiple fish culture and aquatic programs within
the Freshwater Fisheries and Hatcheries Division of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. This is an
opportunity to carry out fish culture practices to meet program and agency goals.
POSITION DUTIES
The position participates at the Albert Powell and Cushwa Fish Hatcheries in the coldwater fish culture and production of several varieties of salmonid fish species for fish stocking. Job responsibilities include:
- The position is responsible for the completion of daily fish culture, rearing activities and maintenance as directed by the facility manager of the Albert Powell Fish Hatchery
- Reaching a targeted growth of trout
- Monitoring water flows within the hatchery
- Cleaning raceways to ensure fish health
- General grounds maintenance, grass cutting, weed eating
- Assist in fish loading and fish distribution, by truck, as instructed by the facility manager
- Clean and sanitize stocking vehicles to ensure bio security and hatchery health
- Providing hatchery personnel with assistance and other duties as assigned
- Occasional weekend and holiday work may be required.
Work schedule and physical working conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in variable and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Ability to work in hot and cold wet conditions in and around water. Travel is required for short periods of time to accomplish agency goals. Ability to lift and move fifty (50) pounds. Occasional weekend and holiday work may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School diploma or GED
Experience: None
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants with prior Coldwater hatchery experience.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
