LOCATION OF POSITION

This recruitment is open to individuals able to work in one of the following locations:
  • Annapolis
  • Baltimore
  • Bel Air (Employees hired in this location will be required to train in our Elkton office)

POSITION DUTIES

Position Description Are you interested in working with the Comptroller of Maryland? We are looking for motivated individuals to work in our Baltimore City, Anne Arundel County, and Harford County Branch Office locations of the Taxpayer Services Division. The main purpose of this job is to provide assistance at a beginner level of taxpayer service to taxpayers and tax preparers who contact the local branch office through office visits, virtual appointments, telephone, and email. Responsibilities also include reviewing and preparing appropriate tax returns at a beginning level, provide telephone assistance at a beginner level to all taxpayers who call the branch office and the contact center with questions related to all tax types. Learn to accept payments in accordance with Trip 21 procedures at a beginner level. Respond to correspondence through the CRM application regarding tax forms, tax information, adjustments, and payment plans to meet the taxpayer service needs of the State at a beginner level. Learn and create basic payment plans according to the guidelines. 

Please note: 
Employees hired for Bel Air will be required to train in our Elkton office. 

Evening and weekend work may be required during peak times of the year. 
Leave may be limited during certain times of the year due to high volume events, projects or special assignments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience involving one or more of the following areas: customer service, telecommunications, fiscal clerical or clerical related work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty credit hours for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in accounting and budget classification or accounting and budget specialty codes in the financial clerical and technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Customer Service Experience. 
  • Good Communication skills (speaking & writing) 
  • Organizational skills.
  • Experience with personal computer and software applications
  • Knowledge and experience in Maryland tax laws and forms.
  • Knowledge and experience in Federal tax laws and forms.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

  • Employee must be able to work in a full-time capacity: Monday through Friday from 8:00 a. m. to 5:00 pm.
  • Employee must be able to tolerate an occasional uncomfortable or unpleasant experience presented by upset or irate taxpayers. 
  • Work may involve special physical demands such as lifting 25 to 35 pounds, climbing ladders, delivering supplies, etc. 
  • Employees are unable to prepare tax returns outside of the requirements of the job or work for private accounting companies.
