LOCATION OF POSITION

This position is available with the Department of General Services (DGS), Maryland Capitol Police, located at 29 St. Johns Street, Annapolis MD 21401.

Main Purpose of Job

The Police Communications Operator will provide services to law enforcement, security personnel and the public through the use of a computer assisted dispatch/records management system and multi-channel police radio equipment and phone system.

Employees in this classification are considered Emergency Essential Personnel and must be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night and are required to remain or report for duty at such hours as needed to maintain the continuous operation of this agency. If you are the selected candidate for this position, you will be required to complete a Pre-Employment Physical, which will assess your ability to safely perform the essential functions of this position.

Duties for this position include but not limited to:
• Respond appropriately, communicate clearly and precisely in emergency situations and remain professional when dealing with employees, contractors, visitors, and the general public. Any duty or responsibility required to allow DGS-MCP the ability to fulfill its overall mission. 
• Maintain shift reports, NCIC/METERS logs and other paperwork required.
• Operate NCIC/METERS terminal and provide requested information in a timely manner.
• Monitor intrusion alarms, fire alarms, parking lot access control, and respond appropriately.
• Monitor security cameras for criminal or suspicious activity and dispatch appropriate personnel.
• Receive, direct, and handle all telephone communications coming into the Police Communications Center.
• Receive and transmit information via multi-channel radio.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience operating multi-channel radios, keyboards or computer terminals in a law enforcement or related operation.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Operations Specialist  classifications or Signal Corps, Cyberspace Support, or Communications specialty codes in the communications field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding all qualifications.
• Experience working as a communications operator/dispatcher for a law enforcement agency.
• Working knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the use of CJIS and NCIC systems.
• Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and make sound judgement decisions.
• Experience utilizing a multi-channel radio communications systems and computer aided dispatching systems.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicants for this classification may be subject to an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

2. Employees in this classification will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

The examination for this position will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED.  The eligibility list will be valid for one year and may be extended.  The list will be used by the hiring authority to select employees for interviews.  Eligible lists may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification.
Please note, selected candidates may be required to complete and successfully pass a State and Federal fingerprint background check prior to being hired.You must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act to be hired in the position for which you apply.
