Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as the Health Educator for the Cancer Screening Programs Unit (CSPU) within the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control (CCPC) in the Maryland Department of Health (MDH). This position is responsible for health education coordination, contract monitoring, program administrative support, and liaising on behalf of the CSPU. This position monitors several grants to local health departments and health systems to provide no-cost cancer screenings, patient navigation, and follow-up services to low income, uninsured and underinsured, program-eligible individuals through the Maryland Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) and the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund (CRF) Cancer Prevention, Education, Screening and Treatment (CPEST) Program. This position reviews and advises on education and outreach strategies and activities developed by local grantees for reaching general and target populations. This position also identifies health education resources and materials appropriate for statewide dissemination for cancer awareness months.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health Education, Community Health Education or Health Science.

Experience: Two years of experience planning, developing, implementing and promoting health education projects.

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 18 credit hours in Public Health Education, Community Health Education, Health Science or related behavioral science and three years of experience planning, developing, implementing and promoting health education projects for the required education and experience.

2. Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in Public Health, Community Health Education, or Health Science for the required education and one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute a Doctorate degree in Public Health, Community Health Education, Health Science or Public Health Policy for the required education and experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Educator and Community Health classifications or Health Educator and Community Health specialty codes in the Public Health field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
