Performance Based Opportunity
As part of our continuous efforts to optimize performance
and drive success the Geologist I is eligible for an annual promotion. The
incumbent may advance to a higher grade within the classification series, based on satisfactory work performance.
Progressive grade levels include:
Geologist II – Grade 16 ($57,095 - $91,742)
Geologist III – Grade 17 ($60,801 - $97,940)

Main Purpose of Job
The Geologist I will assist with evaluating technical reports and remedial solutions for contaminated environmental media for sites overseen by the Maryland Department of the Environment’s (MDE) Land Restoration Program’s (LRP) Federal Facilities Installation Restoration Program (FFIRP). The incumbent in this position will assist with reviewing and overseeing work plans and technical documents associated with environmental investigation and remediation projects of varying complexity. The incumbent in this position will also be responsible for evaluating the progress of assigned FFIRP projects that will require oversight of field activities. The Geologist I will also complete projects with staff professionals, MDE administrations, and other State and federal agencies that involve site visits to acquire geological and chemical data and coordinate various phases of these projects.
The working conditions of this position may involve exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. Site visits entail exposure to a variety of field conditions. The working conditions of this position may involve exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury. Field visits may include potential exposure to conditions, such as airborne particulates, steep slopes, uneven terrain, streams, mud, ice, and snow. Work involves special physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more, climbing ladders, etc. When going on site visits to industrial facilities, protective gear is mandatory. Site visits to some uncontrolled hazardous waste sites may require employees to wear respirators for emergency escapes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.
Experience: None.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for- year basis for the required education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 6 months of experience in the field of Geology.
- A Bachelor's Degree in one of the following disciplines: Geology, Hydrology, GeoChemistry, GeoPhysics, or Environmental Engineering.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
2. When assigned to an environmental program at the Maryland Department of the Environment, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.
2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Medical Monitoring Program (MMP) is designed to detect health risks or adverse effects of occupational exposure to hazardous materials and to direct targeted treatment and occupational illness/injury prevention strategies. MDE employees who may be exposed to hazardous materials are required to participate in a pre-placement, regular and/or post-termination medical examination. MDE has determined that this position be part of the MMP; therefore, applicants selected for employment must successfully complete and pass the medical monitoring examination as a condition of employment. Information regarding the MMP is provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration website.
3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
4.Employees in this position will perform site visits and will require access that must be granted and approved by the Department of Defense (DOD).

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State employees are awarded six (6) personal leave
