Main Purpose of Job

The School Counselor, in collaboration with staff and families, supports student learning and success at MSD by providing a continuum of school-based mental health counseling services that incorporate evidence-based preventative and intervention programs and strategies aimed at enhancing the development of social-emotional skills, behavior, and overall well-being of students enrolled at MSD.  As a member of the Mental Health Team, the School Counselor works closely with the school’s psychologists, social workers, administration, and student support specialists, and is supervised by the school’s Director of Mental Health and Behavioral Support Services. The School Counselor may supervise counseling interns and practicum students.

This is a 10-month position.

POSITION DUTIES

The MSD School Counselor:
● Helps guide and support the development and implementation of all Tier 1 (school / department-wide) interventions and universal preventative mental health programming.

● Provides evidence-based school mental health counseling to MSD students, both individually and in groups. 

● Provides counseling and support during “crisis” situations.

● Works collaboratively with staff to improve the social and emotional learning (SEL) of students in the classroom; assists staff in establishing a learning environment that provides students with an opportunity to grow socially and emotionally.

● Establishes and maintains communication with parents; consults on social and emotional issues with parents. 

● Participates in team and community meetings.

● Serves as an IEP team member; as needed, conducts counseling assessments, determines present levels of performance, and establishes counseling goals and objectives specifically addressed to student needs.

● Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports on student counseling services and treatment progress. 

● Consults as needed with referral agencies and community resources related to mental health, school counseling, and social services.

● Refers students involved in alleged or suspected abuse and neglect incidents to Child Protective Services (CPS) as appropriate and / or directed.

● Provides service coordination for Medical Assistance (MA), as needed / identified by IEP team.

● Provides in-service training to other MSD staff as requested; assists classroom staff with the implementation of treatment aids and strategies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The applicant will possess or be eligible for:
● A master’s degree in School Counseling.

● The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) School Counselor Certificate.


Applicants must:
● Be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and written English.

● Possess experience working with a diverse group of students who are Deaf or hard of hearing, including those with multiple disabilities (e.g., autism spectrum disorder; intellectual disability) and unique language / communication needs.

● Possess knowledge of counseling theory, principles, ethics, and evidence-based practices.

● Possess knowledge and experience with Tier 1 (school-wide) interventions and universal preventative mental health programming.

● Possess the ability to prepare and deliver presentations and written reports and summaries.
