Located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, JPPM is home to over 65 archaeological sites, more than 30 historic buildings and structures, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. JPPM supports the preservation of Maryland's cultural resources and connects people to the past through the preservation and interpretation of our onsite historical and archaeological resources. www.jefpat.org

Main Purpose of Job

Provide building maintenance and custodial services and refuse disposal for office areas, public buildings, rest rooms, and picnic areas at Jefferson Patterson Park, with a focus on the Patterson Center. Provide set-up and support for public events and private rentals. Monitors facilities during daily operations, rentals, and events to ensure that JPPM policies are being followed and to ensure the safety and security of the site. Will also perform maintenance and repairs on buildings, grounds, tools, equipment, vehicles, and tractors. This position provides facility-wide support in all areas mentioned above in order to ensure the JPPM staff have an adequate and safe working environment in which to meet the mission of MDP and JPPM.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsible for overseeing and coordinating building cleaning for the Patterson Center, along with other park buildings as directed by Maintenance Supervisor, for day‐to‐day operations as well as special events. Develops Patterson Center’s cleaning protocols, in consultation with colleagues and supervisor. Inspects buildings to ensure cleaning standards and safety and sanitary regulations are adhered to. Cleans buildings to promote a healthy, comfortable, and inviting environment for colleagues and visitors. Disposes of all refuse from buildings and picnic areas. Resolves and briefs the supervisor of any deficiencies.

 

Performs routine maintenance and repairs of JPPM buildings, primarily the Patterson Center. Inspects, maintains, and makes minor repairs to electrical and plumbing systems, walls, ceiling, and other structural and decorative material. Performs inspections on safety equipment to ensure proper working order. Performs preventative maintenance and inspections of all installed equipment as scheduled. Makes daily checks and note conditions. Adjusts and repairs mechanical equipment. Makes temperature, humidity, hot water adjustments and repairs utilizing the EMCS. Maintain air filters.

 

Responsible for monitoring events in the Patterson Center, and when necessary, the Pavilion, MAC Lab Meeting Room, and other venues during events and while renters are utilizing the facilities. Performs related maintenance, setup, and custodial duties ensuring building cleanliness before, during, and after events. Secures building(s) at the end of the rental periods or special events.

 

Makes themselves available to provide information and assistance to renters during event rentals. Ensures renters finish their event and rental on time and that the renters perform duties as stated in their contract. Interacts with the public and represents JPPM in situations when no supervisors are on‐site. Coordinates with oversight of the Patterson Center to report any issues with events and update protocols and policies.

 

Maintains open channels of communication with park personnel. Completes reports or paperwork to include logs, incident reports, etc. Monitors different maintenance and security related computers. Responds to alarms while on duty and takes appropriate action. Patrols the park, recognizing illegal or unsafe activity and takes necessary steps to safely address situations without endangering themselves or others with a potential conflict. Ensures gates and buildings are closed and secured at the end of the evening. Performs first aid and CPR when needed. Assists other departments and visitors. Must be able to contact emergency personnel and others as needed.

 

Interacts with Calvert County Sheriff’s Department, Maryland State and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Police, firefighters, and rescue personnel. Is first responder to building system alerts, security system alarms and fire alarms, responsible for assessing situation and notifying proper authorities.

 

Ensures professional appearance of Patterson Center grounds by mowing, trimming, and clearing under the direction of the Park Horticulturist. Assists with grounds maintenance throughout JPPM as required. Removes downed or hanging limbs and trees as necessary for the safety of all in the park. Ensures trails and paths are clear of debris and safe for public use. Inspects grounds for adherence to safety and security standards. Develops and revises the frequency of ground maintenance as needed. Works to resolve issues and implement plans set forth by the Maintenance Supervisor.

 

Operates all vehicles (e.g. dump truck, pickup trucks, van, and attachments such as snow plows) and equipment (e.g. tractors and attachments, mowers, graders, forklift, skid steerloaders, backhoes) in a safe and proper manner.

 

Uses hand and electric and gas‐powered tools in a proper and safe manner. These tools include but are not limited to wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, hammers, drills, chainsaws, blowers, string trimmers, shovels, vacuum cleaners, HEPA Vacuums, etc. Oversees, organizes, coordinates, and schedules the preventative maintenance needs of all tools. Researches and advises the best cost for repair and maintenance parts and replacement of tools.

 

Determines type and quantity of supplies needed to ensure sufficient supplies and materials are available to perform the work required by the maintenance department. Coordinates with Maintenance Supervisor to ensure supplies are procured appropriately.

 

Conducts oneself in a professional manner.

 

Other facility related maintenance duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Three years of experience in the building maintenance or building construction trades including two years of experience assigning, reviewing and approving the work of other building maintenance or building construction workers.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in supporting private or public event planning, management, or execution that includes customer or stakeholder engagement

High School Diploma or GED

One year of experience in customer service or retail, or a museum environment

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
