Main Purpose of Job

Maryland's newly elected Comptroller, Brooke Lierman, is building her Executive Office team.  This is an exciting opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the agency and work at the center of the action, in a fast-paced office that embraces creative ideas and innovation.

The Special Assistant is an integral member of the Office of the Comptroller's Executive Office and will report directly to the Chief of Staff and work closely with other members of the executive team on a daily basis to provide direct support to the Comptroller. This position will be  responsible for working closely with the Comptroller's Senior Executive Assistant to ensure that the Comptroller is prepared for scheduled meetings and events each day; conducting research on priority topics; drafting memos and talking points, and providing back-up administrative support to the office, as needed.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, detailed oriented, and intellectually curious.  Most importantly, they will be a collaborator and partner who will help to support the Comptroller's vision for transforming the 1100-person agency and improving opportunities for our communities, small businesses, and families in the State of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Work closely with members of the Executive Team and internal subject-matter-experts to prepare briefing materials and other supporting documents for the Comptroller and Chief of Staff
  • Draft and edit memos, summary documents, letters, talking points and other materials
  • Conduct research regarding topics related and/or of interest to the Comptroller’s Office
  • Provide back-up scheduling and other administrative support for the Comptroller and Chief of Staff, as needed
  • Accompany the Comptroller to meetings and events, as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Two years of administrative or professional work.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

  • The candidate must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, Access; Microsoft Teams; and/or other relevant software.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A self-starter with excellent organizational and research skills
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively and be part of a team

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

  • Work locations may vary depending on the Comptroller's schedule. This position may require travel to off-site meetings or the Comptroller's branch offices.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. This background check is comprehensive and may involve fingerprinting. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six- month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
