Director Of Claims and Benefits

Recruitment #23-005483-0044

Maryland’s FAMLI system makes sure all workers in Maryland have paid time off for medical and family reasons. FAMLI is a $2 billion social insurance system, delivered as a digitally native, public-facing service. We’re in the early stages of building something as big and as far-reaching as unemployment insurance or a new health department, and we are committed to creating an organization that embraces modern best practices in everything it does.

The Director of Claims and Benefits will build and lead the Claims and Benefits directorate in the newly created FAMLI Division at the Maryland Department of Labor. As the first hire of the directorate, the Director of Claims and Benefits will have the opportunity to build the team responsible for FAMLI’s core functional area, creating a lasting foundation for FAMLI’s future. The Director of Claims and Benefits will be a key member of FAMLI’s leadership team, responsible for building and operating an efficient, effective, and customer-centered claims process to create a best-in-class experience for claimants.

Opportunities in state government to build new organizations from the ground up are rare, and FAMLI needs a uniquely qualified candidate for the Director of Claims and Benefits role: not just an experienced and strategic operations expert who will be a trusted thought-partner for FAMLI’s senior leaders; and not just a capable and inspiring servant leader who can hire, guide, and motivate a large high-powered team; but also a “builder” with the imagination, determination, and entrepreneurial outlook necessary to build something great from scratch. If you have what FAMLI is looking for and are ready for the most difficult and rewarding challenge of your career, this may be the job for you.
