Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation, and education, MHT assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage. Part of the Maryland Department of Planning, the Maryland Historical Trust serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

Main Purpose of Job

The purpose of the position is to undertake a comprehensive study of the state’s architectural survey program, focusing especially on documentation included in the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties. Strong computer skills are desired.

POSITION DUTIES

·     MHT is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic Architectural Historian to fill the position of Architectural Survey Data Analyst.

·      Duties of the position will include completing a summary report of survey data by county, outlining the different kinds of survey data found in the inventory, levels of survey documentation, and re-survey needs. The study will include a list of significant themes and major gaps in the survey data identified by county, region or theme, and a report identifying priorities for future survey work throughout the state.

·      This position will also populate new fields, such as historic function and architectural style, in our searchable database - greatly expanding the ability to quickly extract building information for analysis and research purposes. When complete, the study will not only be beneficial to MHT, but will also assist local governments in preserving the historic resources in their local jurisdictions by guiding future planning and allocation of financial resources towards their goals of Preserving the Past.

·      This job requires extreme attention to detail, excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills and a strong interest in working collaboratively. Computer proficiency and demonstrated writing skills are essential.

·      This position is a hybrid position with an option to telework up to 3 days per work week. Telework hours are subject to change.

·      Perform other job-related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Art History, History, Historic Architecture, Folklore, American Studies, Public History, or other closely related field.

Experience: Two years of professional experience and/or preservation internships in one of the above fields.

Notes:

1. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-to-year basis for the required general experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Art History, History, Historic Architecture, Folklore, American Studies, Public History, or other closely related field.

Knowledge or experience in cultural resources, historic architecture, building analysis, and investigation/documentation methods, particularly focused on the Mid-Atlantic region.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
