Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (System) administers survivor, disability and retirement benefits on behalf of almost 414,000 members.  These include active and former State employees, teachers, State police, judges and law enforcement. Our mission is to ensure that sufficient assets are available to fund the benefits when due, and to provide a fully-funded retirement system that is affordable to all participating employers and provides guaranteed adequate disability, survivor and retirement benefits to our members.

Investment Division
The Investment Division is a 47-member team within the System that is responsible for implementing and managing the defined benefit investment program.  The team manages investments internally and partners with external firms to manage a globally diversified portfolio that includes public equity, fixed income, credit, absolute return, real assets and private equity.  Total plan assets were $64.4 billion as of 3/31/23.

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland State Retirement and Pension System is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Senior Portfolio Manager in its Investment Division. The Senior Portfolio Manager reports directly to the Managing Director of Private Equity, who is responsible for managing the $13.7 billion Private Equity portfolio.

Essential Job Functions and Duties
1.   Work collaboratively with the Managing Director to support the overall investment program.
2.   Perform regular reviews and evaluations of private equity managers.
3.   Conduct due diligence on new investments.
4.   Participate in meetings with current and prospective managers.
5.   Assist in the sourcing and evaluation of co-investment opportunities.
6.   Participate in the process of reviewing and negotiating legal fund documentation.
7.   Work collaboratively with the operations team in the initiation and maintenance of accounts.
8.   Conduct research on investment ideas and themes.
9.   Track and model investment performance and exposures.
10. Prepare presentation materials for Investment Committee meetings.
11. Work effectively with asset class consultant.
12. Assist in the development of analysts, associates, and interns.
13. Participate in other projects and duties as assigned.
14. Serve on limited partner advisory committees.
15. This position will require significant travel which will likely include international travel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college

Experience:  Seven years of professional investment experience, in evaluating and recommending private market investments.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:  Preference will be given to candidates with a CFA and/or CAIA, FRM designation and a bachelor’s or advanced degree in Math, Science, Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration or similar field of study.  An additional five years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.  Experience evaluating venture capital general partners. Experience evaluating direct co-investment opportunities.
