Main Purpose of Job

The Network Administrator’s role is to ensure the stable operation of the data center infrastructure. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links. Employees will also analyze and resolve end-user hardware and software desktop and server problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end-user training where required.

Employees will manage on-premise systems, servers, storage devices, and network connections to ensure the high availability and security of the supported business applications. This individual also participates in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure system provisioning and maintenance is consistent with State’s goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements. 

Employees’ secondary duties will include providing dedicated support for multiple agencies with their break-fix issues. 

Job entails working in a Datacenter, working at heights, lifting, and relocating equipment.

POSITION DUTIES

Build and deploy new servers and manage virtual and physical servers operating systems.

Ensure the security of the server infrastructure by implementing industry best practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance. 

Develop and maintain documentation about current environment setup, standard operating procedures, and best practices.

Anticipate, mitigate, identify, troubleshoot, and correct hardware and software issues on servers.

Recommend, schedule, and perform software and hardware upgrades, patches, and reconfigurations. 

Manage the physical environment of the server racks including cable management, documentation, labeling, and configuration of switches for console and remote access. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Five years of experience, three years of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks supporting 1,000 or more users and an additional two years of experience in planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute completion of high school or a high school equivalency certificate and completion of a certification program in Network Administration, such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Juniper Networks Certification Program (JNCP) or equivalent certification program for the additional two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute experience on a year-for-year basis: in planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices for graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree in computer information technology, management information systems, or other information technology related field, to include course work in local or wide area computer network, from an accredited college or university and three years of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks supporting 1,000 or more users for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in Network Analyst classifications or Network Integration and Management specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. Candidates substituting military experience should be honorably discharged.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Our Preferred Candidate Will Have the Following:
Experience performing network duties for a State of MD agency.

Experience working in a data center that houses servers and storage devices.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached. Employees may be furnished with a pager or cell phone.

Applicants for this classification may handle sensitive data. This will require a full scope background investigation prior to appointment.  A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the applicant. 

Employees may occasionally be required to travel to field locations and must have access to an automobile in the event a state vehicle cannot be provided. Standard mileage allowance will be paid for use of a privately owned vehicle.
