POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Blue Crab Program, at the Matapeake Work Center in Stevensville, MD, is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Contractual Natural Resource Technician position. This position will assist with field surveys that monitor the status of the blue crab population in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay. Duties will include both the trawl survey that samples crabs and key finfish species, as well as the Cooperative Blue Crab Data Collection Program which is conducted on commercial vessels.
A wide range of areas are sampled from the head of the Bay to the MD/VA state line. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, as work on commercial vessels requires early starting times. Occasional overnight travel is required to access remote sampling areas. Additional duties would include assisting with data entry. Staff will work remotely and independently as well as in small teams, with minimal supervision in remote areas throughout coastal Maryland. Work assignments may require in-state travel using their own vehicles in which mileage will be reimbursed. A valid driver’s license is required. 
This is a maximum 5-month contract in which the position will run from May thru October 2023. Seasonal staff are hired to assist during the busiest part of the year (Summer-Fall months) where overtime pay or comp time, and health benefits are not offered.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

Notes:
  1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study for the required experience.
  2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants with strong field biology skills, the ability to work independently in remote areas.
  • Experience with small boats and navigation.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons in this position may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
