Main Purpose of Job

BEACHES
The main purpose of this part-time contractual position will be to conduct and monitor inspections as well as collect water samples in support of the Environmental Health Recreational Bathing Beach Program. This position will ensure compliance with applicable state regulations and promote a healthy community for all residents following state and local policies and requirements. This position will also learn to collect water samples from recreational bathing beaches in accordance with Recreational Bathing Beaches grant agreement and COMAR 26.08.09. This position will learn to prepare laboratory slips and water samples for transport to the State Laboratory. This position will also learn how to calculate geomean and assist with drafting public notification for recreational bathing beach advisories. In addition, this position will learn to use web-based resources to consider weather events which may impact the beach sampling schedule.

POOLS
The main purpose of this part-time contractual position will be to conduct regulatory inspections and analyze water chemistry in support of the Environmental Health Public Swimming Pool Program. This position will ensure compliance with applicable state regulations and promote a healthy community for all residents following state and local policies and requirements. This position will also learn to conduct routine and follow-up inspections of assigned pools to determine compliance with safe pool operation standards according to Maryland regulations COMAR 10.17.01. In addition, this position will notify pool operators when corrective actions are required and recommend pool closure for non-compliance in accordance with COMAR 10.17.01.

The duties of this position require use of a State government vehicle to perform the assigned essential job functions. Therefore, the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid Class C non-commercial driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland. Driving privileges will be regularly monitored for compliance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
