Main Purpose of Job

This position serves on the Green Ridge State Forest Manager’s staff as the Administrative Specialist responsible for providing frontline visitor and customer services, fiscal/budgetary oversight, administrative support, personnel support, and forest certification and revenue oversight to support State Forest operations. These duties include public interaction and support, fiscal/budgetary operations management, personnel management, procurement processing, revenue oversight and analysis, and general administrative duties. This position also develops and implements procedures to improve the overall operations management of Green Ridge State Forest. These forestry services directly support the Departmental mission and goal of conserving the natural resources of Maryland and protecting the Chesapeake Bay.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for an Administrative Specialist III located in Allegany County, Maryland. The position will be stationed in the Green Ridge State Forest office in Flintstone, MD. The position provides a role in customer service, office management, budgetary, procurement, and administrative support in the operation of the 49,000 acre Green Ridge State Forest complex.
Duties include but are not limited to: frontline visitor support services for State Forest operations; outreach and public education; campground operations supervision; forest certification administration; budget monitoring; procurement and purchasing; revenue collection and processing for fuelwood permits, camping, target range, and receipts for the timber sale program; seasonal employee personnel administration; and associated administrative and clerical operations necessary to support unit programs and delivery services. The position is full-time, 40 hours/week.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work. 

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of knowledge and experience in operational budget monitoring and management.
  • One year of experience in collecting and processing revenue receipts.
  • Experience with providing customer and/or visitor services.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining electronic reports, spreadsheets, desktop publishing products, and databases for business purposes.
  • Experience in revenue and expense tracking and reconciliation of financial reports.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Persons appointed to this classification may be subject to assignment in any county of the State.
  2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, are required to submit a telephone number where they can be reached in case of emergencies.
