Introduction
The Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth and Victim
Services serves as a coordinating office that
advises the Governor on criminal justice strategies. This office plans,
promotes, and funds efforts with government entities, private organizations, and
the community to advance public policy, enhance public safety, reduce crime and
juvenile delinquency, and serve victims.

Main Purpose of Job
POSITION DUTIES
Assist walk in claimants.
Maintain close contact with
claimant and/or the victim identified in the claim, acting as a point of
contact on each claim as assigned.
Process each request for
compensation, as assigned, in a timely and efficient manner, including reviewing
the claim for eligibility, collecting, verifying, and evaluating all necessary
claim documentation for the Board and making a recommendation for award or
denial to the Board.
Prepare written memoranda, when
necessary to provide a claim status.
Process each claim, as assigned
for award or denial after the Board’s decision, including telephone and written
notification to the claimant and/or victim and preparation and submission of
the required financial information for payment.
Provide information to designated
community – based victim service providers with whom the claimant is working.
Coordinate services to victims and
claimants with the victim services coordinator and provide referrals as
necessary.
Maintain an acceptable level of
competency in victims’ rights knowledge, cultural and diversity awareness and
other areas as designated by the Deputy Director of the Victim Services Unit.
Participate in interoffice and
interagency initiatives designed to promote victim services throughout the
State of Maryland.
Conduct and participate in
outreach activities as directed by the Deputy Director of Victim Services.
Maintain a network and positive
relationship with criminal justice based and community-based victim service
provider partners in assigned jurisdictions.
Attend Board hearings as required
and prepare each case file for hearing, when requested.
Present professional testimony,
when requested and as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Our
Preferred Candidate Will Have the Following
Experience working in the State
of Maryland Criminal Justice system.
Experience writing professional business documents, (i.e.) case management notes, court
reports or other legal documents.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work
for an agency and have a current employment contract of 30 or more hours a week
(or on average 130 hours per month) will be eligible for subsidized health
benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual
employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your
medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have
enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost
for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental
death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible
to pay the full premium for these benefits. View rates on the Department of

Paid leave will accrue at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
