POSITION DUTIES

The WIC Service Associate assists with the delivery of WIC services at a Howard County clinic site to assure the provision of high quality, cost-efficient, culturally sensitive services that comply with all Federal, State, and local agency policies and procedures. Answers phones, makes appointments, determines income and residency responsibilities. Assists in getting anthropometric measurements. Provides nutritional counseling, conducts nutrition classes and breastfeeding promotion. Prescribes standard food packages.

20% Customer Service
Greets clients and records attendance in WOW system. Explains paperwork to WIC applicants. Accepts and screens telephone calls and schedules appointments. Contacts clients who missed appointments to re-schedule. 

20% Documentation and Data Entry
Determines WIC eligibility correctly. Documents income, address, identity, immunizations, and breastfeeding statistics in the WOW computer system. 

20% Health Screening 
Completes health measurements and gathers nutritional information to identify nutritional risks.

20% Health Education and Referral 
Provides general health and nutrition information to clients through individual and group sessions. Evaluates and refers clients to other health, foods assistance and social service programs as needed. 

10% Issuance of WIC Benefits 
Issues benefits and/or eWIC card, marks attendance and makes subsequent appointments at nutrition education/benefit pickup or enrollment appointments.  

5% Breastfeeding Promotion and Support
Educate participants regarding the benefits and contraindications of breastfeeding, refers participants to Breastfeeding Peer Counselor for additional support. Promotes breastfeeding in the community. 

5% Other Duties as Assigned
Accepts responsibility for special projects as assigned. Participates in Emergency Preparedness training or actual events. May be assigned vendor monitoring or outreach events. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience in health or human service delivery, performing tasks such as program eligibility determination, health screening, client referral services, or nutrition education.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Health Services classifications or Health Services and specialty codes in the health-related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired qualifications:
- Bilingual in Spanish
- Previous WIC experience 
- Proficient in virtual platforms like Zoom and WebEx
- Experience with customer relations in a professional setting
- Ability and experience working both in teams and independently

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
