Main Purpose of Job

The Alcohol and Drug (A/D) Professional Counselor Provisional is the entry level of work, at the non-licensed Master’s Degree level, counseling clients with substance use disorders by using intervention, treatment and rehabilitation. Employees in this classification do not supervise other Alcohol and Drug Counselors. The Alcohol and Drug Professional Counselor, Provisional represents the Behavioral Health team in the Department of Juvenile Services facility providing direct clinical services to youth based on a comprehensive assessment & service plan.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Provide individual, family and group therapeutic counseling to assigned youth, including leading Seven Challenges groups, TAMAR-Y and other assigned groups to address behavioral health issues including social adjustment as indicated through the development of the youth’s Individual Treatment Service Plan (ITSP);

  • Provide Crisis and On-Call Services for Behavioral Health Emergencies both on and off-site working in rotation with other licensed clinicians to provide emergency coverage in a 1-week duration, rotating schedule.

  • Work as a leader, consultant, and/or member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team to assist the team’s understanding of social and emotional factors underlying the juveniles’ involvement with DJS and the implementation of the Behavior Management Program;

  • Maintain all documentation & reports including therapy notes, admission & transition reports, bio-psychosocial assessments, treatment plans, Court reports, and recommendations in the youth’s health file and/or ASSIST, and complete facility and operational and service delivery reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Master’s or Doctorate degree in a health or human services counseling field from an accredited college or university approved by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists or completion of a program of studies judged by the Board to be substantially equivalent in subject matter and training.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Experience providing substance abuse counseling to clients.

  • Experience creating treatment plans.

  • Experience performing intakes and assessments for admission to alcohol and drug counseling programs.

  • Case management experience.

  • Experience in crisis intervention.

  • Letter of Authorization to practice as a trainee from the MD Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists – if you possess a Letter of Authorization, please upload it with your application or fax it to Jakiraman Jones at 410-333-4188.

  • Possession of an Alcohol and Drug Trainee Status letter, a CAC-AD or CSC-AD from the MD Board of Professional Counselors. If you possess an Alcohol and Drug Trainee Status letter, a CAC-AD, or CSC-AD please upload it with your application or fax it.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. In accordance with Health Occupations Title 17 and Code of Maryland Regulations 10.58.07, candidates placed in this classification must apply for and receive a letter of authorization to practice as a trainee from the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists within 90 days of their date of hire.

2. Employees must successfully obtain licensure from the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists as a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor within one year of meeting the experience requirements for Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

3. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
