Main Purpose of Job

Data collection and processing for Bay Bottom habitat mapping project. Data collection will consist of side scan sonar, sub-bottom seismic, swath bathymetry, sound velocity probes, marine magnetometer systems, sediment samplers, and gravity corers operated from various survey vessels in the Maryland Chesapeake Bay, lakes, and reservoirs. Assist senior scientists in the interpretation and analysis of the data. Assemble geologic data sets to include data conversion, GIS geodatabase creation, assist with GIS map products. Assist senior geologists in interpretation of these data, in support of scientific studies. Assist in final reports summarizing interpretations and results.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources – Maryland Geological Survey is seeking to fill along-term contractual position at the Geologist I level. The successful applicant will carry out several primary and diverse functions focused on the data collection and processing for the Bay Bottom habitat mapping project. Data collection will consist of side scan sonar, sub-bottom seismic, swath bathymetry, sound velocity probes, marine magnetometer systems, sediment samplers, and gravity corers operated from various survey vessels in the Maryland Chesapeake Bay, lakes, and reservoirs. Tasks include operation of sampling equipment and acoustic survey systems, coring, grab sampling, GPS survey equipment and data loggers. The position will also include travel within the State of Maryland and occasional overnight stays. Processing will consist of assisting senior scientists in the interpretation and analysis of the data, assembly of geologic seabed datasets to include data conversion, GIS geodatabase creation, and assistance with GIS map products. The successful applicant will also assist in final reports summarizing the interpretations and results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for- year basis for the required education. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in geophysical/hydrographic field work
  • Experience in GIS software applications
  • Experience on small to medium sized marine vessels

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. When assigned to an environmental program at the Maryland Department of the Environment, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
