Introduction

This is a contractual, position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Services. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources – Maryland Geological Survey is currently accepting applications for a part-time, Limited Term Contractual position at the Geologist I level. The successful applicant will carry out multiple primary and diverse functions associated with the enhancement and revision of a GIS-based Maryland Coastal Plain Aquifer Information System (MCPAIS).

Specific duties of the position include: (1) leading a team of geologists in efforts to interpret stratigraphic contacts from lithological and geophysical borehole data, (2)correlating regional hydro stratigraphic contacts among boreholes to create interpolated continuous surfaces, (3)assembling geologic data sets to include data conversion, GIS geodatabase creation, metadata creation, and incorporation of data into GIS map products, and (4) assisting with final reports summarizing interpretations and results. Other duties may include determining the integrity of geophysical and lithologic data and making recommendations concerning the inclusion and analysis of data to improve the final geospatial product. Work frequently requires contact with Maryland Geological Survey geologists, government personnel involved in water-resources management and regulation, and contractors responsible for creating online geospatial web apps. The position often coordinates activities within the Maryland Geological Survey and with other State agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for- year basis for the required education. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using ESRI ArcGIS, Golden Surfer, Rockworks, CorelDraw, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Microsoft Excel software.
  • Experience interpreting Maryland coastal plain hydro stratigraphy using borehole geophysical logs and lithologic data.
  • Experience with technical writing and project management skills.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. When assigned to an environmental program at the Maryland Department of the Environment, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

SELECTION PROCESS

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
