Introduction
The
Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in

Main Purpose of Job
To serve as an ASL Instructor for MSD staff, county bus drivers, and families during the day or in the evening. Teach ASL classes from the beginning level to advanced level. ASL course content includes a variety of ASL materials (e.g. Signing Naturally, Master ASL, etc.). To meet the needs of staff, bus drivers, and families, an expansion from the curriculum is supported. To educate class participants on deaf awareness, deaf culture, and deaf sensitivity is encouraged. Share information with class attendees about current and local deaf events/news. Provide additional ASL resources.
POSITION DUTIES
Maintain registration forms for class attendees.
Maintain attendance records.
Plan instruction for weekly classes.
Provide ASL instruction to staff and bus drivers.
Provide ASL instruction to families that is meaningful and
applicable to their home life.
Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support
materials.
Convene in person and/or virtual classes as
scheduled and respond to inquiries in class or via email.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelors in related field is
highly preferred.
Experience: At least one year of teaching experience. Must have excellent
communication skills and ability to successfully interact with diverse
populations. Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Recognized
state and national certifications in ASL (ASLTA, RID, etc.).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at
their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections
5-560-568)
Applicants must:
Have experience teaching American Sign Language.
Native speakers are encouraged to apply.
Candidates will need to provide three letters of
recommendation.
BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
