This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forestry Unit. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service is seeking a candidate to work as a Forest Technician in Howard/Montgomery County project. This position will operate from the Howard/Montgomery Forest Service office located in Woodbine, Maryland. Examples of job duties include assisting a Forester with collecting technical forest data for Stewardship Plans, Roadside Tree Application review, forest fire protection, assisting with tree planting programs and implementing urban forestry programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


1) Experience in forest data collection and analysis and tree identification.

2) Training and experience in wildland fire suppression and control.

3) Training or experience with bare-root tree planting.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification will be subject to assignment in any State forest or in any county of the State. Upon permanent appointment, the employee will be required to reside in the county or region to which they are assigned.
2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, are required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
3. Employees in this classification will be required to obtain specific levels of fire suppression training as mandated by agency policies.
