Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust, an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking a motivated, energetic and creative individual, who is committed to providing outdoor educational experiences for children and adults, for the Museum Educator position at the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM).  JPPM, the State Museum of Archaeology and a center for both regional and statewide archaeological research, is located on 560 acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, and is home to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab) which houses over 8 million artifacts.

Main Purpose of Job

This position provides outdoor educational experiences at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM) and participates in all aspects of the educational programming which are consistent with the Park’s mission. Responsibilities include: conducting school field trip programs, summer camps, demonstrations/workshops, off-site programs for community groups, developing and conducting outreach programs, and assisting in park events.

POSITION DUTIES

Develops content and works as a team to conduct public education programs.

Plans and conducts workshops and demonstrations on archaeological, historical, environmental or cultural topics, according to one’s expertise.

Works with staff to develop effective outreach programs for community groups.

Assists with the maintenance of structures and supplies used by JPPM’s Education Department.

Assists with Park events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: One year teaching (K-12), museum education, or other related experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in history, education, museum studies, historic preservation, anthropology/archaeology, environmental education, or related fields.

Experience in historical, archaeological, cultural, or environmental interpretation in a museum or park setting. 

Experience with grant writing.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service needs to be provided before hire.
