LOCATION OF POSITION
Main Purpose of Job
The Department of Natural Resources, Chesapeake and Coastal Service, Center for Education and Conservation Stewardship is seeking two (2) Administrative Officer III team members who will provide administrative, scientific and technical support in developing, managing, and conducting environmental education programs and materials based on the research and science priorities of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. This work aligns the goals and commitments of the Department of Natural Resources, Maryland's Project Green Classrooms, the Chesapeake Bay Program (Environmental Literacy goal), and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Aquatic Resources Education.
(1) The Angler Education position will have primary responsibility for the angler education programs and will also conduct and expand other environmental education programs for the Department that involve working with K-12 schools on indoor and outdoor science investigations, student stewardship activities and professional development programs for teachers.
(2) The Environmental Literacy position focuses on connecting and aligning Department environmental education content and programs with formal education standards, requirements and practices in science and other academic disciplines. Duties will include taking lead responsibility for establishing, developing, and managing partnerships with school districts to assist with and support systemic environmental literacy programs, including Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences (MWEEs). The position will also work with educational support funds managed within the Center for Conservation Education and Stewardship.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Experience: Three years experience in administrative or professional work.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields of study:
● Education, environmental education, environmental science, environmental studies/policy, ecology, coastal/marine ecology, sustainability, biology, public land management, outdoor recreation or other natural resources or related fields of study.
And knowledge and experience with:
● Developing angler education programs and teaching fishing skills to youth and adults, or
● Using Next Generation Science Standards, Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards, and the “Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience” framework for formal education.
