LOCATION OF POSITION
Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to serve on the Fire Management staff as Fire Manager at the Church Creek Fire Center, Dorchester County; office location may be negotiable with job offer. The Fire Manager is responsible for managing the State Fire Management Program in multiple regions, as well as providing logistical and operational support on a statewide basis. By carrying-out these responsibilities the Fire Manager ensures that professional and technical employees are trained, equipped, and perform duties to achieve the goals and objectives of the Forest Service. In addition, this position is accountable for safe, efficient and environmentally sound wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire operations. The Fire Manager prepares and maintains the Regional Fire budget, develops equipment specifications, solicits bids, and awards contracts. The position implements and insures compliance with agency wildland fire policy and regulations and also recommends needed changes to policy and standards. The Fire Manager actively works with fire departments, natural resources professionals, non-governmental organizations, interested public, and private landowners to implement and promote the State Fire Management Program.
The incumbent will be subject to assignment in any county of the state. The employee may be subject to serving as the State Duty Officer for wildfire emergencies, which will require being available during specific time periods.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Possession of a high school diploma or a state high school equivalence certificate.
Experience: Eight years of experience either performing, or supervising workers performing technical natural resources or conservation work.
Notes:
1. Pertinent volunteer and/or part-time experience is acceptable. Please document the number of hours spent per week in this type of experience on the application form (MS 100).
2. Applicants may substitute vocational or college education in a natural resources discipline for experience at the rate of one year of education for one year of experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in wildfire operations including serving as incident commander
Experience working with partner agencies
Experience working with fire suppression equipment including dozers and engines
Basic knowledge of Federal programs including Volunteer Fire Assistance, State Fire Assistance, and Wildfire Risk Reduction
Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
