Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Forest Service Project Office, La Plata, MD (Charles County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Southern Region, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Technician I position. The technician will be stationed in the Charles Project field office in La Plata, MD. Services required will be performed on private lands or lands owned by the State and local governments in the areas of forest management, forest data collection, tree planting, wildlife management, forest protection, wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, and urban and community forestry. Maintenance of equipment, as needed, and operation of the following equipment used in the above duties may apply: chainsaw, brush saws, leaf blowers, tractors, ATV's, and other heavy equipment. Applicants must be willing and available to work evenings and/or weekends for wildland fire suppression response; and be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Incumbent will be required to provide a telephone number where s/he can be reached in case of forest fire emergencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: None.

Notes: 

1. Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.   

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Training and experience in the following areas:

Forest data collection and analysis
GIS use
Wildland fire suppression and control
Tree planting

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
