Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide for the safety and protection: they also Enforce the rules and regulations governing the safety and protection of people and property of the State of Maryland. They are not a supervisor but a lead worker providing training to lower-level police officers and building guards.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of this position include, but are limited to:

Assign, review and approve the work of lower-level Police Officers and Building guards on assigned shift. They patrol the building and grounds of this property checking all entrances and stairwells to ensure that the property is secure.

To ensure that police officers and building guards are properly posted and stationed to achieve optimal security.

To lead, train and instruct police officers and building guards concerning post assignment, interior and exterior patrols, alarm controls, communication apparatus and how to direct and participate in rendering aid at the scene of emergencies.

To ensure that police officers and building guards are in accordance with and abiding by the Standard Operations Procedures of the DLLR Police Force.

To review all police officers incident reports to ensure proper and comprehensive completion that also meet the quality standards set forth by management.

To lead and review all police officers follow-up efforts relating to unresolved incidents occurring at departmentally owned facilities.

As essential personnel, Corporal will respond in a timely manner, ready to work, when required to be on-call during emergency situations. (State of Emergencies, Weather related incidents). Must answer agency issue phone in a timely manner.

Monitor surveillance system.

Corporal respond to disturbances and emergencies on their shift. (Including disagreements, conflicts and other situations that occur.)

Corporal also assists and administer first aid and evacuate personnel appropriately when emergencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Two years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.

Notes:

1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207.

2. An associate degree from an accredited college in law enforcement, criminology or related social sciences may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a police officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application.

2. Applicants formerly certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission as a police officer within the past three years who are eligible for recertification at the time of appointment meet the certification requirement for this classification. The recertification criteria are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.07, available at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.

3. Employees may be required to possess or obtain a special police commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-209.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Selection standards for police officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following: U.S. Citizenship Must be at least 21 years of age Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history Oral interview Physical examination Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a phone number where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis, as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. 4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (DLLR/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to DLLR/DUI as a result of unemployment overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
