Main Purpose of Job

To conduct all tasks associated with the interment of veterans and their dependents, and the maintenance of cemetery grounds, buildings and equipment.


Education: Completion of the sixth grade.

Experience: One year of experience in the operation of complex or specialized construction or maintenance equipment which has a pedal operated clutch and a multi-speed manual transmission.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Equipment Operator classifications or Equipment Operator and Vehicle Operator specialty codes in the Equipment Operation field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. 


Experience in cemetery and/or grounds maintenance.

Ability to effectively operate multiple pieces of equipment; including but not limited to tractors, loaders, backhoes and vault haulers.

Ability to perform routine maintenance on operating vehicles. 

Ability to perform heavy physical labor.

Ability to deal effectively and courteously with superiors, co-workers and the public.


Applicants for Motor Equipment Operator I/II and III must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License depending on the type of equipment operated. All applicants must list their license number and date of issue on the application. Employees in the State Highway Administration, Department of Transportation may be required to obtain and maintain Departmental certification on several pieces of specialized seasonal equipment.

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
